Young at Heart

I haven't talked much about my baseball team, the rag-tag group of 8-9 year olds I'm coaching this season, because if I start I may never stop. They're just that much fun. One great thing that happened the other night got me thinking about that cliche that when you're a parent or a teacher or just someone who spends a lot of their time with kids, you get to experience life all over again. I haven't found that so much to be true. Probably because I like being a grown up way more than I ever liked being a kid, so I have no need to do it again. What I do love about being around kids is seeing the exact same world in a very different way. The other night one of my players asked how many innings and outings were left. I chuckled at his vernacular and made a mental not to teach baseball vocabulary at my next practice. Then, I noticed his count of innings and outings kept changing in a way that didn't make sense to me.  When I asked him about this, he told me the numbers were different because the innings changed when you came IN to bat and the outings changed when you went OUT to the field. Duh. INings and OUTings. Of course. Being young means sometimes being pretty dang smart, because you see the world exactly as it's meant to be seen-in concrete, honest … [Read More...]

Lean1

Trying to Be a Lean1 Even on Busy Days

For a long time I’ve resisted any kind of shake meal replacement. I just thought I couldn’t justify these types of drinks when all I preach is to eat whole food. Then my life got hectic and my morning green smoothie routine was thrown off and I started either skipping breakfast or eating whatever I [...]

Waist and Budget Friendly Chicken Pot Pie

Really? Wonder Wednesday is about chicken pot pie? Let me ‘splain. About a year ago, smack in the middle of my all vegan, nearly all-raw “eating episode” I found myself at the refrigeration section of Target throwing Marie Callendar’s chicken pot pies in my cart. I’m not sure if it was an act of defiance [...]

Miss Thing

Do you ever feel like you are swaddling your baby, then you go to sleep and when you wake up you’re signing school field trip forms for that baby? I know it’s cliche, but it really does go by in the blink of an eye. Admittedly, this blog has been pretty boy heavy lately. What [...]

This Was Supposed to Be My Reading List

It seems strange to write the day after a tragedy. This is when having a blog and being in social media gets tougher to navigate. You never know what to say or do. Do you write about Boston? Do you write as normal and ignore the elephant on the page? I don’t know what the [...]

Even YOU can make this

My obsession with Trader Joe’s** is well documented. Now that the store has re-entered our lives I am rediscovering all of it’s perks. Funny though, we have substantially changed the way we eat around here since I last shopped regularly at TJ’s so some of my old “go-to” items are no longer appealing. One thing remains: [...]

beforewaffle

Just serve the slop. They will eat it.

As I was cooking dinner yesterday I quickly grabbed my camera because I decided I wanted to share this particular meal with you. I had two reasons for this and they can both be summed up by this sentiment; I worry that sometimes when I share our meals and send messages about healthy eating, I [...]

Lessons From Family Dinner

How do people not have family dinner? I suppose I can’t call what we do “family” because The Husband is rarely there. But every night we sit around the table, the children and I, and they tell me their tales. “What’s the best part and the worst part of your day?” I ask. What [...]
